The short answer
There is no honest single price for AI consulting in South Africa. A short working session, a small automation and a custom business app are three different jobs. Any quote given before somebody understands your process is, at best, a guess.
The useful question is not “What does AI cost?” It is “What will it cost to solve this particular problem, what will I still pay each month, and how will we know it worked?” A good proposal separates those answers.
What you are actually paying for
Consulting is the thinking before and around the build. That includes understanding the current process, deciding what should change, checking the information involved, comparing practical options and planning how staff will use the result.
Implementation is the work of putting it in place. It may include connecting existing tools, building screens, writing instructions for an AI model, setting permissions, testing awkward cases and training the team. Ongoing support covers monitoring, small improvements and help when the real world does something the original plan did not expect.
Ask for those parts to be named. “AI solution” is too vague to price or compare.
What pushes the price up
Complexity usually comes from the business process, not from the word AI. A tool used by one owner is simpler than a system shared by sales, operations and accounts. Reading a tidy spreadsheet is easier than making sense of years of inconsistent documents.

A written list of examples also saves time. If you want help sorting enquiries, bring ten real enquiries and show what a good outcome looks like. Real examples expose exceptions early and stop both sides designing around an imaginary perfect case.
Typical ways to begin
Some businesses begin with a paid working session and leave with a prioritised plan. Others already know the problem and ask for a fixed quote to build a small first version. A more involved project may be broken into discovery, build, testing and ongoing support.
There is nothing wrong with a monthly service when it includes work you will genuinely use. There is a problem when the monthly fee is hard to explain, continues after the work stops, or hides usage charges that rise without warning.
Do the sums before you approve the work
Use a plain calculation. How often does the problem happen? How much time does it take? What does a missed enquiry, delayed quote or booking error cost you? Do not stretch the numbers to make the project look attractive.
Suppose a task takes an hour a day. Removing half of it gives somebody roughly ten hours back in a working month. That does not automatically mean ten paid hours are saved. Decide what that person will do with the time. The value may be quicker replies, more completed quotes or simply less work after hours.
